Tesla shares fell for a seventh straight day, reaching their lowest since January 2023, as further price cuts over the weekend added to mounting concerns heading into the company's first-quarter earnings report Tuesday. Tesla also lowered the price of its premium driver assistance system by one-third. The price cut follows a monthlong free trial that Tesla pushed out to customers throughout North America starting in late March. "Since late 2023, sentiment on Tesla (TSLA) has deteriorated," John Murphy, an analyst at Bank of America, wrote in a note on Monday. WATCH: Tesla stock hits 52-week low ahead of earnings

I am a big fan of Tesla products and the company, but we do not currently own the stock. Since hitting its all-time high on Nov. 4, Tesla shares are the worst-performing member of the "Magnificent Seven". With prices running from about $40,000 for a single-motor version to $70,000 for a tri-motor variant, the Cybertruck's specifications were remarkable. China represents the largest market for EVs at the moment, and BYD is leading Tesla there. Among U.S. manufacturers, Tesla, because it eschews the conventional dealer model, has excellent flexibility on pricing, which they adjust dynamically.

Tesla's new Cybertruck is shown on display at a Tesla store in San Diego, California, on Dec. 9, 2023. Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of 3,878 Cybertrucks to fix a "stuck pedal" issue that had been depicted in a viral TikTok video posted last week by owner Jose Martinez. After assessing the problem, Tesla on April 12 decided to issue a voluntary recall of the Cybertrucks, the filing says. CNBC asked the NHTSA about the trapped pedal issue on the Cybertruck on April 14, after Martinez's video raised public awareness of the defect and unintended acceleration. The NHTSA said it "uses many data sources in its enforcement processes, including social media and vehicle owner and other related forums."

Tesla's stock is down over 10% in the last year, and Elon Musk's net worth has also fallen. Lately, social media platform X has begun to look more like regular old Twitter. Musk and representatives for Tesla and X did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. "Honestly, the best thing that Twitter can do to regain its position is to sideline Musk.

AdvertisementAuto expert Sandy Munro took a Tesla Cybertruck on a mini road trip and had one main complaint — the truck can be difficult to maneuver at times. Instead, Tesla has a rearview camera that displays on the truck's massive infotainment system. The auto expert is far from the first to express frustration with backing up in the Cybertruck. "A camera feed constantly runs on the center screen, but I still checked the rearview mirror out of habit every few minutes." "You have to be cognizant all the time that this is a big truck," Munro said of the Cybertruck.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything put Elon Musk's claims that the Cybertruck is bulletproof to the test. AdvertisementThe Cybertruck might not be as bulletproof as Elon Musk has advertised. AdvertisementWhile the truck didn't prove entirely bulletproof, Nelson said he was still impressed by its durability. Since the Cybertruck was first announced in 2019, Musk has hyped up the rugged nature of the truck, claiming the vehicle would be entirely bulletproof. AdvertisementDuring an interview with Joe Rogan in 2023, Musk said that the standard Cybertruck wouldn't have bulletproof glass, but the stainless steel doors would still be thick enough to stop a bullet.

Some Tesla Cybertruck owners noticed their new stainless steel vehicles have small rust specks. A few months after deliveries began, some members of a Cybertruck-owners forum started complaining about rust spots on the vehicle. After all, the Cybertruck is the first stainless steel vehicle to be produced since DMC made the stainless steel DeLorean and later halted production in 1982. The extra upkeep isn't entirely unexpected for experienced Tesla owners, many of whom have taken on the role of early adopters. If Tesla hits Musk's ambitious production targets for the Cybertruck, Tesla is likely to face less forgiving buyers, automotive analyst Ivan Drury told BI.

Tesla shared a video of a Cybertruck scaling a difficult off-road trail in Utah. The electric truck, which was shown with a driver inside, conquered the off-road trail known as Hell's Revenge in the video. Travel site Utah.com describes Hell's Revenge as having "steep climbs, descents, and some edges that are not for the faint of heart." Morrill said navigating Hell's Revenge with the tri-motor EV, called Cyberbeast, is "like off-roading in easy mode." The Cyberbeast truck managed to drive 318 feet with the sled, while the Ford truck got up to 263 feet.

The Tesla Cybertruck is impressive and worrying

Then, in 2019, Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Cybertruck, a bare metal box on wheels. Even when I parked a rented Tesla Cybertruck next to a hot-pink McLaren supercar in a shopping center parking lot in California, the people in the McLaren couldn’t stop talking about the Cybertruck. Peter Valdes-Dapena/CNNThe Tesla Cybertruck looks like nothing else on the road. There’s a lot to like about the Cybertruck, but it also embodies a disturbing level of individual arrogance in hard, unforgiving steel. The Tesla Cybertruck's simple interior is nice enough but, with hardly any switches or knobs, this is the easy part.

One owner even said they'd been warned when the truck was delivered that it could rust in the rain. "The advisor specifically mentioned the Cybertrucks develop orange rust marks in the rain and that required the vehicle to be buffed out," a member of the Cybertruck Owners Club forum wrote. Stainless is reactive and free iron that sits on it will rust," the Cybertruck engineer said. Demaree said the latter method appeared to do the trick but advised Cybertruck owners to be careful using the polish on the truck. Tesla delivered its first dozen on November 30, and several celebrities have been spotted with their own Cybertrucks in the months since.

Tesla owner Ben Levin went camping in Texas with the company's newest EV, the Cybertruck. AdvertisementTesla's rough-and-tumble Cybertruck might be perfect for camping, at least according to one owner, but it's missing one key feature — enough heat in the truck's bed for chilly nights. Levin identified several Cybertruck features that made it ideal for camping, including the spacious design of the truck. Cybertruck owner bought a truck tent to go camping. AdvertisementTo combat the cooler temperatures, Levin said he'd recommend Cybertruck owners consider bringing a heated blanket or portable heater for camping trips in colder weather.

Read previewNew Tesla Cybertruck owners might want to wash winter road grime off their pickup as soon as possible. Manuals for other Tesla models also advise immediate removal of corrosive substances — but "to prevent damage to the paint," rather than the exterior metal itself. Road salt is one of the biggest culprits of corrosion in cars, but typically, the undercarriage is most at risk since paint can protect the body panels. Chevrolet warns salt may damage the paint of its Silverado if it remains on the exterior for extended periods of time. Of course, depending on who you ask, the Cybertruck's lack of a finish on the steel may be a feature instead of a bug.

Tesla may be stuck in "production purgatory" that could pressure the stock, according to Redburn Atlantic. The firm initiated coverage of the Elon Musk's EV maker on Wednesday with a sell rating and a $170 per share price target. EV sales began slowing in 2023 as consumers and businesses signaled caution toward going fully electric. The companies that will benefit most in the new EV landscape, the analyst added, will "iterate best-in-class EV platforms and scale desirable models to support high utilization at lower unit costs." Analysts polled by FactSet forecast 73 cents per share in earnings on revenue of $25.6 billion.

But he ran into some issues along the way — including difficulties with charging and a glitch in Tesla's infotainment system. He also said that closing the tonneau, the cover that spans the back of the truck, helped improve the Cybertruck's range. But despite the hiccups along the way, Wang enjoyed the experience, especially the spacious cabin and comfort of the vehicle. "It's a fantastic truck," Wang said.

The next Tesla after Cybertruck will be more affordable, Musk said. Musk said his company is "quite advanced" in its work on the affordable Tesla, and that he is reviewing production plans weekly. "The revolution in manufacturing that will be represented by that car will blow people's minds," Musk said. "It is not like any car production line that anyone's ever seen." Many car companies have responded to this change in demand by pulling back production plans while dealers lather on discounts to move these cars off their lots.

Tesla's Cybertruck doesn't have door handles but a button along its window column. Musk first teased that the Cybertruck didn't have door handles over two years ago. Earlier prototypes of the Cybertruck appeared to have a door handle along the side of the car that would pop out similar to the Model S door handles. But Musk announced in 2021 that the vehicle wouldn't have door handles. Tesla owners have complained about the company's high-tech door handles in the past.
